Not only are we hurtling toward a new year at light speed, we are on the doorstep of an entirely new decade, which somehow doesn't feel quite right...

I mean, he's not wrong.

To be honest, I'm not sure me from a decade ago would recognize me today.

This time 10 years ago, I was deep in the throes of wedding planning and feeling quite certain about how the rest of my life was going to play out. Yes, life always has its little ups and downs, but I had big plans and everything seemed to be going my way.

As I sit here, typing out this newsletter to you today, my life is wildly different in ways I could never have imagined — sometimes heartbreaking, but mostly downright magical.

But as I try to imagine my life a year from today, I have very little idea what my life will look like, aside from where I will be working (here at IMPACT), that I'll be a keynote speaker at DSMW2020, and a general sense of where I'll be living. Otherwise, looking ahead to my future feels a bit like looking through a fog, where I can only see about 25% of what lays ahead.

As I told a friend after work over drinks earlier this week, "I have no idea what my life will be filled with a year from now... and I'm terrified. I feel like I'm throwing myself off a cliff. But I'm also excited. Really, really excited."

What's strange is that, as digital marketers and business leaders, we have a tendency to plan for the future from a reactionary, fear-based posture. We "future-proof." We say we want to live on the bleeding edge of what we do, but we so very desperately fear change — even when it's positive.

To be fair, our goals are almost always focused on growth, as well as creating stability and opportunity for our employees in what can be a fairly unforgiving and scary world. So, taking a more "safe" approach to what we do each day makes sense. We want to minimize our risk while also maximizing our reward.

But if I've learned anything over the past 10 years — and in the past two years, in particular — you can't plan for everything.

More than that, you may find that, sometimes, you'll arrive at the destination you thought you always wanted, only to realize it's not what you want anymore. You'll need to be brave enough to admit to yourself that the way it's always been done isn't good enough anymore. And you'll need to light a match, set fire to everything, and chart a completely new path forward.

And now, here's THE LATEST...

👉 With 2020 almost here, what can we expect digital marketing to look like next decade? (3-minute read)

With Black Friday behind us, it's time to look ahead at what's to come in 2020. In a talk for Marketing School Live, author and marketer Neil Patel laid out his thoughts on what we can expect in the new year... and it's looking like 2020 is going to be a year of less reading and more watching, listening, and talking. But since we know a lot of you may not have time to watch this talk, IMPACT Paid Media Project Manager Rachel Palmateer has put together this actionable overview of the most important takeaways of what you need to know about digital marketing in the coming decade.

👉 The FTC is cracking down on fake online reviews, but how many more are still out there? (2-minute read)

When it comes to e-commerce, online reviews can make or break a sale — and make or break a business. According to the e-commerce consulting firm Pattern, when a product rating goes up by one star on Amazon, the sales increase by 26%. But even with a crackdown by the FTC — after Riley Skincare allegedly had its employees write fake reviews and downvote negative reviews about their own products — fake reviews are still a problem. In this article from IMPACT Account Manager Karisa Egan, you'll learn why fake reviews are still a massive problem for all companies, and what (if anything) can be done about them.

😴 Weekend Nonsense

Yeah, about all those errands I was going to take care of today...

Oh, Reddit.❤️

😎 One last thing

I was reminded recently that this year marked the 20th anniversary of the release of The Matrix — which starts my forever-boyfriend Keanu Reeves:

Although I know it's beloved by many, what if I told you The Matrix is a classic that deserves a little more respect? Particularly since it so perfectly captures the confusing swell of emotions that often accompany the end of a decade or century.

Have a great weekend! 👋
