| Hey, Some news: I have finally gotten around to recording my new Facebook Ads tutorial – which has been requested by so very many of you. Sorry it took so long, but I have missed so much work in 2025 with a hilarious variety of illnesses. I'm not quite done being a walking medical encyclopedia but I am back at work properly now. Once I'm done editing the video – it's very comprehensive (aka long) – I will upload to YouTube. Which I expect to happen next week. However, be warned that I may not be able to send a newsletter next Friday as I am traveling home to Ireland to high-five my folks. Heaven only knows what tomfoolery will ensue. I strongly recommend you subscribe to my YouTube channel if you haven't already. And maybe hit that notification bell too – which will ensure you actually get told when it drops. Subscribing on YouTube these days is more of an algorithmic nudge which may or may not put my videos in your feed. 2025, eh? While you are waiting for the tutorial to be edited, there's some prep I recommend doing so you can follow along – you will be watching on-screen as a I create a campaign from start to finish, dodging all the algorithmic landmines that Facebook has wantonly strewn in all directions. Namely: - Get a handle on your branding
- Make your ad images
It will be very handy for you to prepare your ad graphics in advance as that won't be covered in the tutorial. But a more fundamental step is to nail down your branding – at least in a basic way. And if the idea intimidates you, don't worry, were just going to take your book cover and use that as a jumping off point. This super quick three-minute video will outline a basic approach to branding that anyone can follow – and afford, most importantly, in this blistering late-stage capitalist landscape we hold so dear. That video is more of an overview. For a more detailed tutorial on creating killer ad graphics – where I turn your book covers into Facebook Ads, then check out The Image Workshop. It's all done live, so it's a bit of fun. You get to see my mistakes and the thought processes behind each design choice, so I hope yu learn a lot from it too. We cover a range of genres in each episode - different styles of book cover. And I only use free tools like Canva so you can easily follow along. Episode 1 is here: And then Episode 2 is here: I recommend watching both as we cover different techniques and genres in each. And every cover poses its own challenge. I've had a lot of people asking if the series is continuing – absolutely yes. I love doing it and I have a big pile of covers from you guys to work through. And now that I'm back at work properly, I'm eager to get back to this series. And to address the other big topic in my mailbag recently, yes, I'll have plenty of stuff on the latest Facebook changes too. I know some authors got absolutely keelhauled by the last round of changes – where Facebook helpfully removed most author targets. But I have some tips to help you, and a sneaky workaround to postpone the worst of the changes – at least for a few months. All coming soon to an inbox near you. Dave P.S.
