[THE LATEST] Email List Hygiene Is a Big Deal, Google Makes Advertising Apps Easier, & YouTube Ads Spend Is Down a Whopping 20% with Retailers

Email List Hygiene Is a Big Deal, Google Makes Advertising Apps Easier, & YouTube Ads Spend Is Down a Whopping 20% with Retailers ...This Is THE LATEST!

It's now day three of the July 4th holiday weekend here in the States, and I've got to be honest with you — if the past few days are any indication, I'm not winning any self-control awards in the near future.

Case in point, July 4th, itself.

On Thursday morning, I bought an honest-to-goodness charcoal grill, and I had plans. Big, patriotic, adult-like plans.

I was going to stand outside in my backyard, while the dogs protected me from evils such as wayward squirrels in trees and birds flying 50 feet above us. I was going to light things on fire with an undeserved sense of pride. I was going to put veggie kebabs on skewers and make the most beautiful grilled salmon the world had ever seen. I was going to use my new grill tools set to flip things over and... you know, other grilling-associated of activities.

Instead, my grill stayed in the box.

And I ate a homemade ice cream sundae out of a waffle cone for dinner, while binging the entire third season of Stranger Things

I am a weak woman.

Still, I guess there is hope. Did I eat ice cream for dinner? Yes, I did. But I also went to the gym yesterday and today, so that's something. Plus, I bet there are more than a handful of you out there in the audience who have also committed similar summer vacation sins.

If you're one of them, that's OK.

You can make up for it right now by taking a few minutes to peruse some of the digital sales and marketing goodness below. I've included great features on leveling-up your email marketing game, app advertising through Google, a YouTube advertising slump, and more, so there's something for everyone.

Though these articles won't help you burn off any rocket pops you may have consumed in the past 72 hours, I can guarantee you'll feel like an accomplished professional by the end of this newsletter — well, at least for a little while.

OK, this is something special for those who are paying attention. IMPACT Live is only 30 days away. And I have a secret promo code that will get you 30% off. You will only see this code presented this one time here — in this very newsletter — and nowhere else. So, here's your one shot, y'all. Use promo code FRIENDOFLIZ30 to be my friend and save $$$ on your ticket to one of the best digital sales and marketing events of the year.

📫 Proper Email Contact List Hygiene Can Make or Break the Success for your Email Marketing Campaigns

When you think about the variables that determine the success of an email marketing campaign, what comes to mind at first? Compelling subject lines that determine open rates? Or maybe snappy in-text link and call-to-action copywriting to drive click-throughs? Those are both critical, but one of the most commonly overlooked email marketing tasks is maintaining proper email contact list hygiene. In this expert interview, IMPACT Director of Audience Engagement and Community Stephanie Baiocchi explains what email contact list hygiene is and why it makes such a difference in email marketing.

🏆 This Year, Retailers Have Spent 20% Less on YouTube Ads — Is YouTube Not Delivering Enough ROI?

Well, this is kind of surprising. Apparently, for the first five months of 2019, retailers have spent 20% less than expected on YouTube Ads. This has more than a few people wondering, "Does YouTube not deliver the advertising ROI it promises?" We shouldn't be so hasty to answer "Yes!" to that question for a number of reasons. IMPACT Digital Beat Reporter Iris Hearn returns with a great analysis on why spend for YouTube Ads is down and what this shift means for businesses.

😂 Weekend Nonsense

I know there are some people out there who don't "get" Reddit. (I'm not judging; I used to be one of those people.)

Now, I'm obsessed. And one of my favorite "subreddits" — topic-specific forums — is called real life doodles, because, whenever I'm stressed out, they make me laugh like a five-year-old.

What are real life doodles? Well, here's one of my favorites.

See what I mean? It's absurd and it brightens your day. Basically, real life doodles are the best kind of nonsense.

📚 What I'm Reading

OK, it's Saturday and it's summertime, so I'm going to switch this section up a bit for the weekend.

In a recent article I wrote about being the internal editor and project manager for Marcus Sheridan's second edition of They Ask, You Answer, I mentioned that one of the ways I keep myself sharp as a writer and a content creator is by consuming lots and lots of comedy writing. In fact, comedy is one of my greatest inspirations. (You'll have to read the article above to find out why, though,)

Sharing that experience with all of you inspired me to re-read one of my absolute favorite political satires of all-timeThank You for Smoking by Christopher Buckley.

So, when I'm not eating ice cream like a child while watching TV this weekend, you can find me lounging in the sunshine in the backyard reading that book.

What's on your bookshelf for the summer?
