At 4 a.m. tomorrow morning, I will be hitting the road for IMPACT HQ in New Haven, Connecticut, once again... for super secret reasons I am not at liberty to share yet.
However, while I always love loading up my car and making the trip north to the mothership, there is one thing I must face every single time I prep to leave that I absolutely hate:
The mountain of laundry I must conquer before I can even begin to think about packing. Not only do I hate doing laundry, generally speaking, it's just a reminder of how bad I am at being a responsible, functioning adult.
I think it's annoying me right now more than usual because it reminds me a lot of a creeping feeling about work I experience around this time every year:
"Yeah, I'm proud of the things I've accomplished and excited to plan for the year ahead, but the list of things I haven't done is absolutely horrifying."
All of the little strategies and initiatives taunt me as I look ahead to 2020, like the digital equivalent of a pile of unwashed t-shirts and socks.
I just keep reminding myself that, while it's important to be honest about what things didn't get done and why, I can't let myself wallow. (What's that old saying? You can't look to the future if you keep tripping over what's behind you.)
Yes, this time of year is all about reflecting on what's past through a brutally honest lens — but wallowing in your digital sales and marketing "might haves" and "should have beens" serves no purpose.
Instead, we need to smash the reset button with purpose, learn new things, and fix what's broken. That's how you get after it.
Speaking of which, my pants aren't going to wash themselves. Sob.
