When I first talked to Brie Rangel (our COO) about writing her most recent article on being a female in the C-suite, she was very clear about her feelings on the topic:

She didn't want to do it. She didn't want to write about it or anything that brought a gendered slant to her role.

I wasn't surprised at all. In fact, it reminded me of an exchange I had with another amazing woman two years prior.

You see, in another life, I was a beer writer. And in the spring of 2018, I was tasked by a local magazine to write a cover story on women in beer

It opened as follows:

Julie went onto say what a positive experience that was.

How she liked not being forced immediately into the discussion of having a conversation about what she does from a gendered perspective, but rather as a business owner. Period.

Brie eventually consented to her writing assignment after I told her the reason why I wanted her to write about the topic of being a female executive leader was precisely because she so desperately didn't want to

I wanted her to explore why she loathed the topic so much and then share it with our audience.

I am so glad she did because, y'all, it's a powerful read.

What's more, she said this to me this afternoon, after it was finally published:

"I enjoyed this one a lot more than I thought I would. It came out easily."

So, I'm going to tell you now what I told her:

"Whenever there's a topic that agitates you to the point where you don't want to write about it, I encourage you to mentally explore it. Often, there's a compelling narrative there that should still be shared."

Or, more to the point, if you find yourself in a situation where you don't want to talk about something because you're having a strong emotional reaction to it, that's usually a sign that it's the number one thing you should be talking about.

That means you have something real and honest and substantive to add to the discussion. Probably an honest-to-goodness true opinion that will make you stand out from the crowd.

Those are the kinds of opinions I want to hear about more than anything else. The opinions of yours that fire you up, get you gesturing passionately, and inspire you to talk about something you believe in at your core — whether that's positive or negative.

That's my call to you today. Say something that matters. Ruffle some feathers. Go against the grain. Stand out just on the basis of your ideas and your perspectives.

Your audience will thank you.

👉 "Now that the dust has settled on Google's massive core update, what do we need to know about how it will impact our content ranking?" (2-minute read)

We let you know about the start of the update last week. Now that it's done, we can take stock of the effects. Anytime there's a massive Google core update there's a waiting period as the dust settles. Such updates could mean dropped rankings for SMBs, and the need to pivot strategy in the short term — but so far the May 2020 core update doesn't appear to be causing an extreme level of chaos. Still, IMPACT VP of Marketing Vin Gaeta is here with the quick, down-and-dirty analysis on what you need to know about how May 2020's core update from Google will (or has) influenced your content rankings.

👉 "I didn't want to write about being a female C-level executive, but here I am..." (6-minute read)

When IMPACT COO Brie Rangel said she didn't want to write this article, here is what I said — "Why don't you want to talk about it? I ask because that's actually exactly what I want you to talk about — I know about your resistance to the topic overall, and I want you to be brutally honest about why. Publicly. To our audience." So, that's exactly what she did. In this brutally honest and thought provoking article, learn why IMPACT's new COO is exhausted by the discussion of women in leadership, and what she wants others to know, whether they are a female leader like her or aren't.

👉 "We need to run virtual sales calls now, but what's the checklist of everything we need to do before, during, and after our video sales appointments?" (4-minute read)

In wake of COVID-19 (coronavirus), video has become the new norm over the last six weeks. Virtual happy hours, birthday parties, business meetings, even weddings have become commonplace for nearly everyone. Video is a powerful tool that allows you to connect with people personally from a remote environment. In many ways, it can make you feel like you're in the same room, but is it still possible to truly sell over video? How is it possible? Absolutely. And in this article from DM Training CEO Steve Bookbinder will arm you with the comprehensive, 17-step checklist you need to run a picture-perfect video sales call that your ideal buyers will adore.
