Hey, It's quite a while since I've been to an author conference. They can be great places to lean the latest and greatest ways to sell books, hone your craft, understand the market better, or learn new ways to run your nascent publishing empire a little more efficiently. Any of these can be worth the trip alone, depending on the quality of the speakers I guess, but I always get the most value from networking – basically just sitting down and having a natter with other writers. Whether its workshopping a plot hole over coffee, trading ad tips with a fellow Facebook nerd as we huddle over our laptops, or simply just gossiping in the hotel bar about various unprintable shenanigans, networking can be the best part of any conference. Facebook groups are not an adequate replacement for all of that, but are handy when you have a question that Google can't easily answer. The best ones, in my never-humble opinion, specialize in certain topics – which keeps things nice and focused, and more professional too. The very best ones do that and are blessedly free of scammers and snipers and salesman too, and I have three such Facebook groups for you today. Reliable sources of information. Safe places to ask questions or give advice. And all free to join. 1: Author UnleashedWant advice on your cover? Worried your blurb doesn't hook readers? Need someone to look at your Amazon page and give you a few pointers? Then check out Author Unleashed – which is run by Robert Ryan. You might know some of his books, which I've recommended before, like Amazon Ads Unleashed. This group has a different focus though – a great place to get savvy second opinions on your presentation, i.e. the package you are putting in front of readers. 2: Newsletter Ninja: Author Think TankFor any questions on email providers, automation sequences, sign-up pages, dynamic content blocks, tagging/segmenting, personalization, welcome messages, reader magnets, lead generation – all things email basically – then check out Newsletter Ninja: Author Think Tank. If you recognize the name then you'll know this group is run by Tammi Labrecque – author of the Newsletter Ninja book which I've raved about previously. Necessary disclaimer: Tammi previously edited some of my books on self-publishing. But I asked her to do that because she knows her stuff (and when it comes to email, she knows it inside out). So, consider me biased if you like, and perhaps check out the reviews of Newsletter Ninja on Amazon if you desire more objectivity. Or just join the group and see for yourself. Tammi does have some courses and wotsits for authors, but there is no hard sell in the group at all. Most importantly, knowledge isn't gatekept. In other words, questions are actually answered in the group. It's not like other groups I've seen where they only give you a piece of the answer, then ask you to pay up for the book/course/webinar. (I hate that.) For further clarification – as someone raised the question last week when I was gushing about my new Remarkable 2 – this isn't a sponsored post either. I've never done a sponsored post BTW and if I ever did, I would most certainly tell you. I'm not an affiliate for Tammi or anyone else mentioned here. I have no commercial connection pr any other kind of connection other than being a member. I simply find these groups useful and think you might also. Right. Onwards! 3: Authors Optimizing Amazon and Facebook AdsThe final group is all about Amazon Ads and Facebook Ads, as you might have cleverly deduced from the title. A couple of the mods here have written books on ads but there is no hard sell here either – questions are answered by them/the members on the spot, without pushing people to purchase anything, and I respect that a lot. Authors openly share techniques, resources and data – as well as the occasional frustration! Equally good for beginners and more advanced users, a hand trick to pull off. Join here. Your Faves?Any more useful ones out there? I'm particularly curious about those which fit the criteria above: friendly, free to join, and focused on a particular topic. Let me know by Reply! Also mention if you have a favorite author conference. I'm thinking of venturing forth from my hidey hole in 2023. Maaaaybe. Dave PS. Writing music this week is Dry the Rain by The Beta Band. |
