Let me warn you, there is no magic trick in this video that will suddenly transform you into a wondrous marketing machine which can sell full price books without breaking a sweat. While there are some tips in there which should help you in that mission, the real solution to this problem is to grow your readership. Existing readers will be happy to pay full price for books, as long as you are doing your job on the storytelling front. So if you want to sell full price books, you need to grow your readership, and then get as many of those readers as possible onto your list… and then work hard to keep them happy and engaged inbetween releases as well. Which sounds like a lot. Hey, no one said it was going to be easy. It is doable though, and this is a nice sustainable way to do it as well – no gimmicks, no shadiness, no short-term tactics that won't work tomorrow. How do you build that readership? Well, there's a million ways, but one of the easiest is via freebies and discounts – yes, them again. This is why I spend quite a bit of time explaining the most strategic way to use free promotions and price promotions. Because it's the easiest and most cost-effective way to grow your readership. And it's by far the easiest way to learn how to use something like Facebook Ads – and that goes double for a more price-sensitive platform like BookBub Ads. That caveat-flavored word salad aside, you will get some proper tips in that video. I think the focus on email is verging on compulsory though, and pretty much everyone should be doing paperback editions so that your full price books always look like discounts (explanation in the video). And then if you are going to try some of the Facebook stuff I mentioned, definitely make sure your presentation and branding are top notch. With stellar presentation and a full price that looks like a discount, then you will make your job of trying to shift full price books with ads a little less challenging. You are still going to be struggling with conversion – but those two things will help, as will judicious targeting. But, really, the focus should be on growing your audience, and building your readership. Use price promotions and freebies strategically to do that, and if you are following the approach outlined in my book Amazon Decoded, you will know how to use that Deals Springboard – i.e. selling full price books by using discounts and freebies to pole vault into the charts, so that you are visible to new readers at full price and Amazon is recommending your book to new readers… at full price. Make sure to watch the video though, it has a lot more on all of that! Dave P.S. Writing music this week is Serge Gainsbourg with L'anamour. |
